Meeting the Danish Parliament – the Danish EU Presidency

Danske Medier and DPCMO are discussing with the Danish Parliament how tech giants control critical information flows. They block citizens’ access to reliable news at will. They can curate and manipulate the information people see - now increasingly through AI-driven interfaces, such as ChatGPT and Google AI Overview. Tech giants have evolved from mere market participants to democratic risks.

OpenAI argues for special treatment due to national security and competitiveness. For the sake of European security, digital sovereignty and competitiveness, we must act.

The Danish Parliament recognises the gravity of the situation. There is clear awareness that the unchecked power of tech giants poses risks to our democracy, media ecosystem, and digital sovereignty. The need for decisive action is clear. We must activate existing frameworks – competition law, copyright, and media regulation – to level the playing field, but also introduce new tools. And we have several concrete proposals.

In a world that is on fire, we should think much more about and protect everything that binds us together as a country and people; quote from the Danish Minister for Culture.

Therefore, the Minister wants to make media and culture the cornerstone of the European defence of democracy and, as part of the Danish Presidency of the EU, bring his European colleagues together.

‘Europe is in troubled times. European democracies are under attack from fake news and foreign influence. This calls for rearmament, and culture and strong, independent media are crucial weapons of defence,’ says the Minister.

The minister will work to ensure proper framework conditions across Europe to support our free and independent media. This commitment gives hope. Where there is a will there is a way.

Today Danske Medier and DPCMO will appear before several parliamentary committees to discuss Google’s blocking of news in Europe and Google AI Overview.
