Google and the Minister for Culture

Two clear messages from the Danish Minister of Culture Jakob Engel-Schmidt, who is aware of the challenges press publishers (and societies) have with Google and other tech companies: 1. tech must follow the rules and find solutions when they are active players in the Danish market 2. we must strengthen the possibilities for effective enforcement, because the existing ones are challenged. This is one of the key issues when the DSM Directive is to be evaluated in 2026

To build trust, foster well-being, and strengthen community, we must have the courage to speak openly about the vital role of culture. Culture is not a luxury – nor is a free press. Together, they form the bedrock of free, resilient, and cohesive societies.

The conversation with big tech isn’t only about fair compensation. It’s about safeguarding democracy itself.
