EU’s Digital Fairness Act

In response to the ongoing challenges posed by certain dominant technology companies that disregard citizens’ rights and fair market principles, a growing number of positive EU initiatives are emerging. However, given the volume of legislative proposals and enforcement actions, it may be difficult to maintain a clear overview of the effectiveness of all these great efforts.

In DPCMO’s submission to the EU Digital Fairness Act consultation, we suggest that EU considers and analyses an authorisation model for dominant global technology companies. This model draws inspiration from established practices in other high-impact industries – such as the pharmaceutical sector – where products cannot be placed on the market without prior approval, rigorous testing, and demonstrated compliance with safety and ethical standards.

By ensuring that global platforms meet clear standards before entering the market and gain access to our citizens, this approach could strengthen fairness and accountability, but maybe also free up valuable time and resources, so we can focus more on fostering European innovation, competitiveness, and digital leadership.
