23 March marks Nordic Day, a celebration of the world’s oldest regional political collaboration

The Nordic Council of Ministers’ theme for 2026 is “Connected in changing times”. In uncertain times, it is crucial that we stand together in the Nordic region. Today we highlight that the free and independent editorial media are a vital force against polarisation and disinformation.

The Nordic countries rank among the strongest in the world when it comes to press freedom and trust in news media. Every day dedicated editorial professionals work to deliver reliable, high-quality journalism. A diverse and pluralistic media landscape is essential for building public trust and strengthening our shared information resilience.

At the same time, innovation in the media and information ecosystem increasingly depends on strong partnerships and collaboration. As technological change accelerates and complexity grows, no single country or company possesses all the capabilities, tools, or authority needed to safeguard open societies and democratic discourse.

That is why we stand and act together – across the Nordic region and beyond – to support independent journalism, foster innovation, and ensure that our information ecosystems remain open, trusted, and resilient.

We look forward to continuing to collaborate and contribute across borders:
