DPCMO today informed the new Danish Parliament about the lawsuit against OpenAI

For several years, DPCMO has tried to engage in constructive negotiations with OpenAI. In 2025, the Minister of Culture appointed a mediator, but when OpenAI refused to participate, the mediators had to step down. As a result, legal action is inevitable.

This case is more than just a private dispute. It concerns the fundamental terms of coexistence between artificial intelligence and independent journalism. OpenAI’s stated mission is to ensure that artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity and makes the future better than the past. However, realising this vision requires respect for the legal and democratic frameworks that underpin open societies while protecting innovation from free riding.

Artificial intelligence must develop in a way that protects freedom of speech and information, as well as our fundamental democratic values.

We anticipate a challenging legal battle ahead. As years pass through the exchange of pleadings, the imbalance in the marketplace will continue to undermine the sustainability of the creative sector and, with it, the media pluralism that is essential to informed citizens and democratic societies.

We need an efficient mechanism for resolving disputes and securing fair outcomes for all parties.
