Europe needs a data revolution

Access to data is not only a major driver for competitiveness, but also essential for productivity and societal innovation; clear speech from von der Leyen in the policy guidelines for 2024-2029.

But how can we ensure competitiveness, prosperity and fairness when global big tech has a data monopoly? How can European SMEs and start-ups innovate and compete when global big tech controls our data?

For years, DPCMO has been trying to have a dialogue with TikTok. TikTok has refused to share relevant data, participate in mediation and engage in dialogue, even though we have documented how DPCMO’s repertoire is used on the platform. At the same time, TikTok emphasises in public how they focus on maintaining trust, authenticity and accountability. So why doesn’t TikTok play by the rules in reality? The answer is obvious: power and profit.

DPCMO has now filed a complaint to the competition authority/European Commission claiming that TikTok is violating the Digital Markets Act.

The European Commission has started active enforcement of the DSA and DMA, and von der Leyen stresses that the Commission will step up and intensify enforcement in the new mandate. DPCMO has high expectations.

We need a level playing field for data in Europe so European SMEs can innovate, grow and thrive, ensuring European job creation and economic growth and thus diversity and choice for European citizens.
