A key focus of our conversation was the growing challenge of enforcing the DSM objectives in the light of big tech’s power play, including Google’s alarming blocking of news content in several European countries.
How do we ensure media pluralism when big tech blocks news at their discretion? How do we ensure citizens’ access to unbiased and reliable information when big tech is gatekeeper and focuses on profit-driven engagement?
And how are European SMEs, including media outlets, supposed to compete with global tech and data monopolies if the global players do not respect the European legislation and effective enforcement takes years? We hope and trust that the new Commission has the courage to act quickly, so all players in Europe have to comply with competition law.
We need to see democracy in action.
