IFFRO World Congress in Quebec

'What's worth copying is worth protecting' - is linked to the evolution of intellectual property. I learnt this from professor Ysolde Gendreau today in Quebec. The quote is from a UK court ruling in 1916, but the principle still applies more than hundred years later, and it's a good reminder that we need to keep things simple if our voice is to be heard. Only big tech benefits from legal discussions about definitions of input, output, opt outs, opt ins, open source, etc.

To be future-proof, predictable and technology-neutral, and thus minimise the risk of circumvention, exploitation and protracted litigation, rules must reflect simple but fundamental principles. IPR for human-made content is not just about money and fair remuneration, it’s also about bringing and binding us together as human beings, social cohesion, enlightenment, cultural diversity and ultimately our democracy.

Access to reliable information and quality content is at the heart of what makes an effective and inclusive democracy.

Great to attend the IFFRO World Congress in Quebec, participating in panels, listening to and learning from skilled and dedicated people from around the world and meet the amazing IFFRO team.
