Press freedom is not just about governments, it’s also about big tech

The increasing global reliance on a few AI products and services affects press freedom and media plurality.

AI companies control access to information through content moderation, censorship, algorithmic filtering, and model training biases. AI tools shape journalistic research, fact-checking, and even writing in ways that may differ from local legal and cultural norms. AI-generated content and AI-assisted research may lead to a homogenisation of global news. This marginalises local voices, languages, and perspectives; and challenges press freedom.

We always say that the plurality of editorial media builds trust and information resilience. That a diverse offer of news content creates social cohesion and engagement.

In the age of AI, ensuring the accuracy and impartiality of news – while safeguarding press freedom and national sovereignty – requires a collective effort.
